In Greek mythology, Helen of Troy (Greek Ἑλένη Helénē), also known as Helen of Sparta, was the daughter of Zeus and Leda, and was a sister of Castor, Pollux, and Clytemnestra. By marriage she was Queen of Laconia, a province within Homeric Greece, the wife of King Menelaus. In Greek myths, she was considered the most beautiful woman in the world, which led her to being abducted several times. Her abduction by Paris, Prince of Troy, brought about the Trojan War.
Modern Helen is a feminine given name derived from the Ancient Greek name Ἑλένη Helenē (dialectal variant: Ἑλένα Helena) whose etymology is unknown; a derivation of the latter from ἑλένη, a variant form of ἑλάνη "torch". Another possible derivation is from Greek Σελήνη Selene, meaning "moon". It has also been suggested that the λ of Ἑλένη arose from an original ν, and thus the etymology of the name is connected with the root of Venus.
