Years passed when at last Hyriel received word from a young hero on the surface of Neotellus. For a time she was happy, as at last she had been released from her isolation. Each day they grew closer and closer, until he swore his life could not have meaning until he was by her side. But it was impossible, she told him. Though her powers allowed them to exchange words, she could never return from her place in the sky.

Hyriel is probably combined from the element hyr and suffix -el meaning "god" in Hebrew (originally el is a Northwest Semitic word meaning "deity"), in which most angel names end. Hyr is possibly an Icelandic poetic term for "fire" or Cornish word for "long".
