The Cardinal's grand scheme was to ursurp the throne. While he had a plan to oust King Louis XIII under the guise of overthrowing a corrupt ruler, it would take time to run its course. To ensure that none would interfere, he slunk into the shadows to dispose of the greatest hindrance of his plans: The legendary Three Musketeers.
Cardinal Richelieu was consecrated as a bishop in 1608 he entered politics, becoming a Secretary of State in 1616. Richelieu rose in both the Catholic Church and the French government, becoming a Cardinal in 1622, and King Louis XIII's chief minister in 1624. He remained in office until his death in 1642; he was succeeded by Cardinal Mazarin, whose career he had fostered.
He is also famous as beeing the bad guy in the novel and the film of "The 3 Musketeers".
