How many times had he been in this place, waiting, watching as his breath condensed in front of him into a white mist? Hearing the sound of snow crunching underfoot, Dugnio gathered his wits. He was no nunter, but he was willing to put his life at risk to save the village in which he had lived. Though to the last an untrained soldier, in order to dispatch those murderous stalkers of the night, he summoned his courage and entered into the dark, snowy wood.
A werewolf (Old English wer(e)wulf, a compound of were "adult male human" and wulf "wolf"), also known as a lycanthrope (from the Greek lykos "wolf", and anthrōpos "man"), is a mythological or folkloric human with the ability to shapeshift into a wolf or a therianthropic hybrid wolf-like creature, either purposely or after being placed under a curse or affliction (e.g. via a bite or scratch from another werewolf).
Their transformation is associated with the appearance of the full moon. Most modern references agree that a werewolf can be killed if shot by a silver bullet, although this is more a reflection of fiction's influence than an authentic feature of the folk legends. A werewolf allegedly can be killed by complete destruction of heart or brain; silver isn't necessary.
