Halcifer was born to a clan of spirit channelers. Upon turning 12, he was given the spirit Clay, who was to be his companion for life. But by the time he was 15, Halcifer was still unable to commune effectively with the spirit. Unable to speak, all Clay could do was helplessly look on as his human partner struggled. But Clay had faith in him. "Halcifer, you're going to be an amazing channeler one day. I just know it!"
