The devastatingly powerful Hordern grew tired of constantly having his way. So he invented a new pastime to keep himself amused: toying with humans. Even the burliest of men were mere playthings before Hordern's overwhelming power. "Since you've no hope of defeating me, why not serve as my toys?" he suggested, and the humans readily assented to what they thought would be a respite from death. They were wrong. For Hordern's idea of "playing" was not very different from "killing."
