Eons ago, a certain hapless woman was deceived by a man and found herself abandoned in a frigid wasteland. Heavy with child, she soon succumbed to the merciless cold. But the resentment in her heart became a curse, until one day it was born from her frozen corpse in the form of Koa. She was endowed with mysterious, freezing powers, the very embodiment of her mother's icy regret. Whenever she went, unrelenting chill would follow, and countless icicles would radiate from her frosty presence.

Koa is the Hawaiian word for a species of flowering trees, and also means "warrior".
