Both on the battlefield and on the throne, Egbert's father seemed unable to take decisive action. The kingdom declined and order deteriorated as a result of his unreliable leadership, but the son learned from his father's poor example. After ascending to the throne, the new king acted with fiery aggression in every situation. His harsh rule that brought many provinces under his reign and bolstered the hand of the law may have been seen as tyrannical, but that the kingdom had entered into an era of unprecedented glory was undeniable.

Egbert is an English and German masculine name of Old English origin; the meaning is "bright sword, bright edge, famous swordsman". It is a two-element name derived from the words ecg "edge of a sword" and beorht "bright, famous". Anglo-Saxon variant spellings include Ecgberht and Ecgbert. German variant spellings include Ekbert and Ecbert. This was the name of kings of Kent and Wessex as well as two English saints. The name was rarely used after the Norman conquest but was revived in the 19th century.
