Her furious father labeled her as his prodigal daughter, while her smiling mother offered her encouragement. Leaving behind the home that raised her, training in the arcane arts, and then returning home, she found no trace of her parents but their worn and weathered bones. Unable to tell which one was which, she felt a dull but powerful feeling swell up inside her as she gazed at their skeletons. Her thirst for vengeance was born.

Maria is a female given name in many diverse cultures with different meanings: "sea of bitterness", "rebelliousness", "beloved, love", "star of the sea" or "wished for child". In the Roman Empire, the name was used as a feminine form of the Roman name Marius. It became popular with the spread of Christianity as a Latinized form of the Hebrew name Miryam. As a result the Latin Maria and the Hebrew-derived Maria combined to form a single name. The meaning of the Semitic-rooted name is uncertain, but it may originally be an Egyptian name, probably derived from mry "beloved" or mr "love" ("eminent lady" or "beloved lady"). The meaning of the Latin-rooted name is similarly ambiguous, possibly deriving from mare ("sea" in Latin), maris ("male"), or the name of the god of war Mars.
