Metatron the Archangel

Lore[]

The brilliantly shining Metatron appears more goddess than angel. Though she is, in fact, an aide of the gods, Metatron's powers are so great that she is the only one of her kind able to oppose their will. Her throne atop the crown of the tree of life, the angel's every action brings her kin to attention, and each and every gesture causes them to feel fear, joy, excitement, gratitude. As for humans, they are not permitted to even witness her form.

Name origin[]

Metatron or Mattatron (Hebrew מטטרון) is an archangel in Judaism and in Christian folklore as well as the Chancellor of Heaven (effectively making Adramelech his infernal counterpart). According to Jewish medieval apocrypha, he is Enoch, ancestor of Noah, transformed into an angel. In Rabbinic tradition, he is the highest of the angels and serves as the celestial scribe.

There are numerous possible etymologies for the name Metatron. The name may originate from either Mattara (מטרא) "keeper of the watch" or the verb MMTR (ממטר) "to guard, to protect", or it might be taken from the Persian name Mithras as there are a number of parallels between them based on their positions in heaven and duties. Metatron seems to be made up of two Greek words for after and throne, μετὰ θρóνος (meta thronos), taken together as "one who serves behind the throne" or "one who occupies the throne next to the throne of glory"; other ideas include μέτρον (metron, "a measure"). Also the Latin word Metator "messenger, guide, leader, measurer" had been suggested.
